Tracks of the Tohorā

In August 2020, researchers from the University of Auckland and Cawthron Institute, in collaboration with the Australian Antarctic Division and the US National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, put satellite tags on six southern right whales – tohorā. As of April 2021, only one whale’s tag (Bill/Wiremu) is still transmitting; the others lasted for between 40 and 237 days. You can see images of the whales and animations of their tracks here.
